Popis objektu

Experimentální stacionární telekomunikační družice. Postavila ji firma Alenia Spazio, Torino (Itálie) (nyní Thales Alenia Space). Provozovatelem je organizace European Space Agency (ESA), Paris (Francie).

Tříose stabilizovaná družice nese experimentální telekomunikační zařízení, pracující v pásmech S a Ka pro spojení s družicemi a v pásmu L pro spojení s mobilními pojítky LLM [=L-Band Land Mobile] v oblasti Evropy, Středního Východu a severní Afriky a přilehlých oblastí moří a oceánů. Posledně jmenované pásmo je určeno též pro distribuci korekčních údajů pro navigační systém GPS [=Global Positioning System] jako experiment EGNOS [=European Global Navigation Overlay Service].v rámci přípravy celoevropského navigačního systému Galileo. Pro spojení s družicemi je vybavena též prototypem laserového komunikačního zařízení SILEX [=Semiconductor Laser Inter-satellite Link Experiment], určeného pro experimentální přenos dat z družice SPOT-4 (1998-017A). Komunikační zařízení pracující v pásmu Ka je určeno pro spojení s chystanou družicí Envisat a se stanicí ISS (1998-067A). Pro korekce dráhy je vybavena xenonovými iontovými motory.

Hlavní řidící středisko se nachází u města Fucino (Itálie).

Plánovaný bod zavěšení je nad 21.5° v.d. Předpokládaná aktivní životnost je 15 roků.

Kolem 22:30 UT: Družice byla navedena na dráhu a oddělila se od nosné rakety. Motor 2. stupně však dával jen 80 % výkonu a vypojil se přibližně o 80 s dříve než žádal plán, proto nebyla dosažena plánovaná přechodová dráha ke geostacionární2,3. ESA však doufá4,5, že se podaří družici domanévrovat na stacionární dráhu.
2001-07-18 15:19 až 15:39 UT: První korekce dráhy7,8.
2001-červenec /Plán/ Dosažení kruhové dočasné dráhy s periodou 18 h opakovanými manévry apogeového motoru na KPL. Vyklopení parabolických antén a panelů fotovoltaických článků. Zahájení provozních testů družice7,8.
2001-září /Plán/ Po dokončení zkoušek systémů družice bude využito iontových motorů ke spirálovitému zvýšení dráhy družice na geostacionární7,8.
2002-02-05 Obnoveno manévrování družice iontovými motory k dosažení stacionární dráhy.
2002-12-03 Uskutečnila se první kokrekce dráhy motorky na KPL11.
2003-leden Koncem měsíce byla dosažena stacionární dráha11.
2003-03-19 Bylo oznámeno, že družice přenesla první snímek z družice Envisat (2002-009A) do pozemní stanice ESRIN poblíže Říma12,13.
2005-12-09 Poprvé bylo úspěšně navázáno oboustranné spojení optickou komunikační linkou s družicí Kirari alias OICETS (2005-031A) organizace JAXA14.
