Popis objektu

Stacionární telekomunikační družice. Postavila ji firma Hughes Space and Communications Co. (HSC, nyní Boeing Satellite Systems), Seal Beach, CA (USA) v závodech v El Segundo, CA (USA). Provozovatelem je firma Communications Satellite Corp. (Comsat), Washington, DC (USA) pro mezinárodní organizaci International Telecommunication Satellite Organization (ITSO, nyní Intelsat, Ltd.), Washington, DC (USA).

Rotací stabilizovaná družice typu HS-353 válcového tvaru o průměru 2.38 m a výšce 5.31 m (po vyklopení antén 7.01 m) má boky pokryté slunečními bateriemi dodávajícími 600 W. Nese 20 převaděčů pracujících v pásmu C (6/4 GHz, šířka pásma 20×36 MHz, EIRP 22 dBW pro globální pokryv resp. 29 dBW pro úzce směrovanou anténu) s celkovou kapacitou 6250 telefonních hovorů nebo 20 televizních programů. Antenní systém (šířka svazku 18° resp. 4.5°), tvořený parabolickou anténou čtvercového tvaru o rozměrech 0.86×0.86 m pro příjem a dvěma parabolickými anténami lichoběžníkového tvaru o rozměrech 0.85 - 1.15×1.3 m pro vysílání je umístěn na stabilizované protirotující plošině spolu s celou elektronikou. Pro korekce dráhy a úpravy osy rotace slouží 4 motorky na hydrazin. Pro navedení na stacionární dráhu je vybavena motorem SVM-4A na TPL.

Plánovaný bod zavěšení je nad 29.5° z.d. Předpokládaná aktivní životnost je 7 roků.

Předchozí družicí této řady je Intelsat 4A F-1 (1975-091A), další je Intelsat 4A F-4 (1977-041A).
