Editor’s Note

Notice Regarding Scanned Cards Due to the fact that cards with bibliographical descriptions were not intended for the public but as a concept to be revised and then published, amendments of their publication date are not consistently repeated for example, if the date was specified in the study of other specimens or sources. Therefore the date on the first card where the date was corrected may differ from the date which is part of the auxiliary abbreviated file record on cards with signatures of existing specimens, where it was not corrected.

Descriptions of some editions are accompanied by copies of select pages from the described original. Usually these are copies, which are sent for the purpose of more thorough bibliographical processing by colleagues from foreign libraries, where the creators were not able to travel in order to study the discovered publications.

In the case of some newly discovered editions or versions which were only recorded in the card index through a transliterated title text based on the supplied photograph, it was later possible to obtain a microfilm of the whole work, which made a detailed description possible. However, in cases where this occurred at a time when the automatic database had already been created, the information from the microfilm was recorded in the database and only a note with the name and a reference to the description number in the database remains in the card index.

At the time when information on existing prints were being collected, the creators of the bibliography could not use internet catalogues, that is why it is now certainly possible to use this means to multiply both the number of existing prints for the described editions and the number of editions themselves.

The chronologically organised list of treatises published by J. A.  Comenius is published on the website of the Department for the Study and Editing of the Works of Jan Amos Comenius of the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic:

The section title J. A. Comenius – Manuscripts does not entail a list of all Comenius´s manuscripts but provides a record of comeniological literature quotations that have been authenticated as existing manuscripts (not just preserved printed text). This record has been included in the bibliography so as to provide informations about the collected excerpts.
