ISS On-Orbit Status 19 November 2001

All ISS systems continue to function nominally, except as noted previously or below.

The crew began the day at 1:00 am EST, first performing some regular periodic Russian medical assessments before breakfast. They were Calf Volume Measurement (MO-7, scheduled every 15 days) and Biochemical Urine Analysis (MO-9, done every 30 days, also before and after Orlan EVAs).

Later, the NASA/JSC "Renal Stone Risk during Space Flight" experiment, started yesterday by CDR Culbertson, was continued for FE-1 Mikhail Tyurin.

The crew completed today's portion of packing UF-1 return items, reviewed the UF-1 timeline and tagged up with transfer planners and the Expedition 4 crew on the ground via S-band.

FE-1 Tyurin worked the very important task of auditing an inventory of remaining food rations (SOP) on board. This information was requested by MCC-M planners to properly support manifesting of Russian and US food rations. The audit was to record the serial numbers of unopened food containers (KRP) in the onboard IMS (inventory management system) database, which also needed to be status-adjusted with respect to opened and used-up (empty) KRPs.

PLT Dezhurov completed an in-flight maintenance (IFM) of the SM Regul system, which consisted of switching the Regul-Packet radiogram uplink channel to Regul-OS second string. The actual IFM was performed without requiring Russian ground station (RGS) coverage. The new setup will then be tested by RGS as part of nominal operations by uplinking appropriate software files.

Tyurin prepared the test of the new Russian segment OpsLAN (BVS) configuration set up last week when the Wiener power laptop was connected to the BRI Smartswitch router. The test was then performed with a Russian ground expert tied in via S-band.

In the SM, the crew replaced an element of the BITS internal telemetry system, the central local group instrument (TsPLG, was erroneously reported as installed on 11/8). The activity was remotely monitored and tested from MCC-M/TsUP on S-band. Late tonight, TsUP will also run remote checkouts of the aft KURS system in the SM on both strings and a functional checkout of the TORU manually teleoperated backup approach and docking system, preparatory to an intermodular test by the crew planned for tomorrow.

CDR Culbertson performed a successful test of the CBCS (centerline berthing camera system), preparatory to MPLM Raffaello's berthing during the UF-1 mission. He also completed the weekly maintenance of the TVIS (treadmill with vibration isolation and stabilization) and did the daily USA payload status check in the Lab.

PLT Dezhurov replaced urine receptacles and filter inserts in the SM toilet (ASU) and completed final stowage of the DreamTime equipment and records.

All three crewmembers performed their regular physical exercise.

Target opportunities for the Russian Diatomeya experiment, which uses film and video taping to record imagery of the world's oceans, included bioproductive areas in the Bay of Bengal Current, the Roaring Forties, the Patagonian Shelf, frontal regions of the South Atlantic and ocean eddies in plankton fields.

Targets for the US CEO (crew earth observations) program today were S. Africa Aerosols (views left and right of track to document late-season burning. Smoke may occur over the Mozambique Channel left of track. On a second pass starting over the major Namibian sand dune field: Views left of track onto the high southern African plateau), and the South Sandwich Islands (of interest: oblique views of these remote islands).

Russian Segment status: SM: Battery #6 is off-line; all others (7) are in "partial charge" mode. FGB: Battery # is set to off-line ("stowage") mode to allow deeper cycling of all others (5), which are in "partial charge" mode. SM ECLSS: Working Compartment pressure -- 743 mmHg, temperature -- 26.9 deg C, Transfer Compartment pressure -- 741mmHg, temperature -- 20.7 deg C, ppO2 -- 159.3 mmHg, ppCO2 -- 3.9 mmHg. FGB ECLSS: Cabin pressure -- 744 mmHg, temperature -- 20.3 deg C. Air conditioner SKV-1 is commanded Off. SKV-2 has a failed compressor and is Off. Elektron is On. Vozdukh is in On.

U.S. Segment status: Node ECLSS: Cabin pressure -- 744.52 mmHg; Node average shell temperature -- 23.5 deg C. U.S. Lab ECLSS: Cabin pressure -- 746.84 mmHg; temperature -- 25.5 deg C; ppO2 -- 172.3 mmHg; ppCO2 -- 4.1 mmHg. Plasma contactor units PCU-1 and PCU-2 are both in Standby mode. Beta gimbal assembly (BGA) 2B in Rate mode, BGA 4B is parked in Directed position at 165 degrees.
